If you don’t already have an HVAC contractor you work with regularly, or even if you do, have you considered the process you use when choosing a heating and air-conditioning contractor? Do you hold local licenses? All 50 states generally require contractors to be licensed within the state in which they’re located. Go a step further and ask to see proof of the license or the license number.

Common Air Conditioning Repairs

Keeping your air-conditioning system running without interruption is vital to your family’s comfort this summer. The most critical things a homeowner can do to keep an A/C humming are to regularly check the A/C’s filters, generally once a month, and have preventive maintenance performed annually.

There are occasions, however, where air-conditioning repair might be necessary. For most systems, these repairs tend to follow a pattern. Some are more expensive, and others require little investment. Because an air-conditioning system is complex and a significant investment, it’s best to have a qualified HVAC technician service it.

Among common air-conditioning problems:

No cold air. If your A/C is releasing air but you don’t feel that it’s cold, there are a few things you can do. First check the circuit board for a tripped breaker and reset it. Then check the thermostat, which might have been inadvertently set higher. Make sure it’s on the correct temperature and setting (to cool, not heat). If these steps don’t work, call a technician. There might be a problem with the compressor or coils.
Airflow. If you don’t feel air coming out of your vents, the problem might be as simple as changing out a dirty filter. If this doesn’t work, your system might have a coil problem that needs professional attention. When dirt builds up on the coils it can cause the entire system to freeze up.
System cycle. You may not have noticed that your A/C was running all the time, until you got that high utility bill. If this is the problem, check the temperature setting on the thermostat and watch to see if the A/C ever reaches it. If it doesn’t, call an HVAC contractor for air-conditioning repair.
Drainage. The condensate drain is critical to the liquid runoff created during the cooling cycle. If you notice that the drain pan overflows, there is probably a problem with the overflow controls. Call a contractor.
